In closing...an update!

Well, it has been a wonderful year overall and it is quickly coming to a close.

Last night, the WMSPTO hosted a phenomenal celebration dance for the 8th graders and they jumped up and down with glow sticks for about 2 hours...that was what they call dancing nowadays (he says in his best generic old timer voice).  This morning we presented awards to many of our 8th graders during the 8th Grade Awards Assembly.  Following that they were able to continue celebrating as they watched the slide show and had time to sign yearbooks together.  Monday, they will enjoy their field day and ice cream celebration followed by a Last Hoorah Dance Party in the gym towards the end of the day.  It was clear after last night that while we have many talented dancers in the 8th grade, as a collective group they could certainly use a little more practice expressing their inner rhythms and gaining confidence dancing in public or the future of wedding receptions will be very bleak indeed.

CBAs are complete, presentations have been made, works have been cited and now the 7th graders are getting excited about their trip to Canobie Lake Park on Monday. The 6th graders enjoyed time at Kimball's today following their week of wrapping up assignments and learning of their language choices for next year.

Final report cards will be available in iPass no later than 2:30 on the last day of school, Tuesday, June 21st.   Students will be dismissed at 11:00 and the iParent portal will be open later in the afternoon after grades have been verified.

Schedules for next year will available in iParent at the beginning of August.

Looking forward to next year, we have been asked to share a couple of announcements from central office:

The registration database for 2016-2017 bus passes is open for business - it can be accessed directly at this linkhttp://www.westfordk12.us/pages/transportation/index

All incoming Westford Academy freshmen will be participating in the One-to-World program for the start of the 2016/2017 school year.  To ensure a smooth implementation, preparation needs to take place before the August launch.  In order for families to make informed decisions for successful participation in the program, it is very important that parents and students take time to browse the One-to-Worldwebsite together and complete the online orientation.  The website provides an abundance of information, all the forms, as well as the link to book appointments for the launch on August 24, 25 or 26.

In closing, I want to wish all of the Father's among us a Happy Father's Day on Sunday.  My wish for you is that you may enjoy peace at the grill or in a comfy chair or in whichever way you would like to spend the day.  While the feeling is foreign to me, I have heard tell that some Fathers actually enjoy spending the day with large groups of extended family and hearing all about the successes of other people's children and the new aches and pains experienced by relatives.  However you spend the day, may it be as you wish!

Have a safe and rejuvenating summer!

Chris

A congratulatory update!

Congratulations to all of the parents of tonight's WA Graduates!

We wish the class of 2016 wonderful success and lives rich with personal fulfillment and positive contributions to society!

It is a very exciting time and hard to believe that in just four short years our current 8th graders will be marching into the stadium in their caps and gowns as members of the graduating class of 2020.  Not to rush that at all, but for those of you attending tonight's ceremony it seems like it was only yesterday that the students were getting their first WA schedules and worrying about who they are going to eat with at lunch in the fall.

As part of that process, WPS Athletic Director Dan Twomey has asked us to share some important information regarding next year's transition to WA.

WESTFORD ACADEMY FALL SPORTS 2016 INFORMATION

Greetings Prospective Westford Academy Student Athletes and Parents,

Welcome to Grey Ghost Athletics!  The Westford Academy athletic program is one of the largest and most extensive sport offerings in Massachusetts with over 1,300 athletic opportunities throughout the year.  In addition, the Grey Ghosts compete in the Dual County League that consists of many of the top programs/teams in the state and in the top divisions of MIAA Tournament.

The interscholastic athletic experience here is a commitment.  During the season, varsity programs compete or practice six days a week and varsity teams can expect to participate on weekends and over vacations.  Freshmen and Junior varsity teams at a minimum will participate five days a week.  Most JV teams will participate 6 days a week during the season.  This includes all vacations.  In addition to developing sport skills, this high level of commitment by the students will foster the growth of the positive values associated with interscholastic athletics.

Recently, Westford Academy fall season coaches, captains and I visited Blanchard and Stony Brook Middle Schools to share information about the upcoming fall 2016 season with the current 8th graders.  Students were given the opportunity to “sign up” for a sport. This visit was for fall sports only because the season begins before the school year starts.   Winter and spring programs have informational meetings during the school year that students may attend.

For more information and for information on how to register for fall sports please visit www.wagreyghosts.com  .  Students must have a current physical and a completed online registration process in order to participate on the 1st day of tryouts/practice.

Additionally, the WMSPTO has asked us to share the following info regarding the evening they sponsor every year to bring the 8th graders from both middle schools together to celebrate:

8th Grade Parents:

The annual 8th Grade Celebration Dance is coming up quickly! Do we have your student's permission slip?

  • Permission slips for the dance will continue to be collected thru Monday June 13thSlips are available in your school office. Unfortunately, we can no longer accommodate specific t-shirt size requests. We will have over 400 students to check-in and prefer to have the majority of students PRE-REGISTERED before the event so your cooperation is appreciated.
  • Attire for the evening will be dressy casual not semi-formal.  Wear white or neon so you will GLOW! Evening activities include DJ, dancing, glow wear and plenty of free refreshments. There will be a uniformed police officer on the premises as well as parent chaperones.  Appropriate behavior outlined in WPS handbook is expected at all times.
  • Please drop off & pick up at right side entrance of school and be prompt. We strongly encourage carpooling.
  • Stony Brook Middle School Gym, on Thursday, June 16th from 7:00-9:30 pm
Again, no rush...let them enjoy being 8th graders!

After all, it will not be long at all until they are turning their tassels and tossing their caps in joy!

Congratulations to tonight's WA Graduating Class of 2016!

We hope your memories of your time growing up in Westford includes fond memories from your years at Stony Brook, as well.

We are proud of all of your successes and wish you well in your future.
